Going to Alabama with a banjo on my knee

Comments

Where in NJ did you grow up? I was born in Teaneck and grew up in the Ocean City/Upper Township area of South Jersey.

I know exactly what you mean about Alabama - Our family used to take the annual summer vacation in Sanibel, Florida, a nice little beach town. Somehow, in my parents' heads, this meant that paradise could be had year round if we moved down there. But, instead of moving to beachy paradise, we moved to redneck central Florida. Yes, it's true that the people are very polite and welcoming in the south... as long as you're not black, gay, not Christian, or from the north. Their prejudices are so overt, it's frightening. I endured many a lecture from a school teacher that started with, "You darned yankees think you can just come down here and do things however you please... Well this is the south, and down here we..." followed by some tirade about how you just don't put artificial sweetener in your iced tea.

One time, shortly after moving there, I was riding in the car with my new friend Trent and his family, on our way to a mall or something. A group of black guys was in front of the 7-11 near their house. Trent's dad said, "Looks like the spooks are gettin' ready to rob the 7-11." His mom, without skipping a beat, responded with, "I'm starting to see a lot more of them around here.."

Uh...

Other neat things I remember:
- On day one, the neighbors kids came over and asked me what church I go to. I explained that I don't go to any church. They responded that they realized I don't go to any yet, because I just moved there, but what church was I planning to go to. I told them that I wasn't planning to go to any and they never spoke to me again.

- The local Pizza Hut had songs on the jukebox with titles like "The South Will Rise Again". They flew the stars and bars next to the American flag on their flagpoles. As far as I know, nobody ever complained.

- The drycleaners where my mom took all her and my dad's stuff was staffed by a very obvious transsexual. I remember thinking that life must suck for that individual living in that town.

Yeah... the south... Ugh.

I grew up in Twin Rivers, just outside of Hightstown, in between Princeton and Cranbury. In other words - less than 30 miles away from you!

Think that's close? Take this: we also vacationed in Sanibel. We drove down there every winter in the back of my parents' Volkswagen hatchback for at least 8 years in a row. I still have seashells collected from those beaches.

One of my worst anecdotes, courtesy of my grandmother's redneck husband Pete (now deceased, so yes, I am speaking ill of the dead): We were driving down the road and saw a nice car parked on the grass in the median. Three black men in tuxedos, clearly on their way to a wedding, were attempting to change a tire without messing up their clothes. Pete says, in his most mocking southern drawl "now, if we could just get that flat part on top, there'd be no problem."
