Even though it adds at least 45 minutes to my commute, I love taking my kids to school. Yes, they're always late. Yes, there is lots of drill-sargent shouting to "hurry up and GET DRESSED." Yes there are often tears as we all stress over what shoes to wear. But fundamentally I love the quality time in the car when we talk, sing or just hang out together.
For the last two weeks we've been listening to Justin Timberlake's CD and we know many of the lyrics to Summer Love ("I can't wait to fall in luuuuuuuv...with you. You can't wait to fall in luuuuuuuv with me. This just can't be summer luuuuuuuv, you'll see...")
But today I declined the JT requests in favor of good old fashioned radio. To make it seriously old fashioned I put on KFOG (classic rock) - just in time to hear the opening strains of Marc Cohn's Walking in Memphis. I really love this song. I have such a vivid memory of listening to it, driving down the streets of Paris, thinking how wonderfully strange it was to hear this kind of song on Paris radio. I never can predict what the French are going to like and that's one of the things I like about them.
Anyway, hearing it this morning put me in a great mood and I started to sing along with it. My kids are used to this and were nice enough not to make fun of me until...
Cassandre: "What did you say?"
Me: "What?"
Cassandre "What did you just sing?"
Me: "Walking in Memphis"
And just as I'm about to explain how the song is really about how certain places can make you happy, and how just walking down the street ("with my feet 10 feet off of Beale") can make you feel special and at home, she says (with relief) "Oh, I thought you said "Walking in Breakfast."
Nevermind.
Cue lots of giggling.
"Girls, I know you'll understand this and feel the intrinsic and incredible emotion. You've just pulled over your head the worn, warm sweater belonging to a boy. Now you haven't had a passionate kissing session with him or anything but..."
Here's an interesting study that shows your preference in music can predict the patterns of your life - including sexual activity, drug use and political outlook. The findings are not as predictable as you might think, here are a couple of tidbits:
Opera fans were as likely as other music lovers to try hallucinogenic drugs
More than 37 percent of hip-hop aficionados and nearly 29 percent of dance music fans had had more than one sexual partner over the past five years, compared to just 1.5 percent of country music lovers. (well, duh)
Fans of hip-hop and dance were least likely to support recycling or alternative sources of energy, and least likely to support the use of taxation to expand public services.
The backers of the study are fielding a worldwide study on music and demographics online. If you're interested in participating, go here.
I love my workout music but it needs a refresh.
I've got my mix set so that I have a couple of songs to warm up to, then it kicks into more high-energy songs to get my lazy butt moving faster. As you will see, I'm a little stuck in the '80s. I need advice from my hipster Vox friends to introduce me to new stuff.
Some preferences: I'm not much into rap, but I do like hip hop - the little I know of it. I don't mind profanity (I personally swear like a sailor). I don't want it to be too disco-like, I grew up in the 70s/80s - I know that music too well.
The goal is to keep my body moving and to keep my mind from getting bored. I don't watch TV when I work out, I watch the basketball boys.
Here's what I've got. What should I add? I would especially love it if you suggest where in the stream they fit best.
- Nothing's Impossible - Depeche Mode (warm up)
- A pain that I'm used to - Depech Mode (warm up)
- Pump It - Black eyed Peas (Time to move faster)
- Don't Phunk with my heart - Black Eyed peas
- Lose My Breath - Destiny's Child
- Place to Go - 50 Cent
- Nake Eye - Luscious Jackson
- The Rockafeller Skank - Fatboy Slim
- Get Ur Freak On - Missy Elliott
- Ba Bump - Black eyed Peas
- Family Affair - Mary J. Blige
- Suffer Well - Depeche Mode
- My Humps - Black Eyed Peas
- No scrubs - TLC
- These things - She wants revenge
- Jump - Madonna
- Song of Life - Leftfield
- Dum Diddy - Black eyed peas (great for crunches)
- U got the Look - Prince
- Never Say Never - romeo Void
- Dreaming - Blondie
- Satellite - bosco
- The Metro - Berlin
- Opportunities - Pet Shop Boys
- Time the Avenger - The Pretenders
- Infected - The The
- Go - Tones on Tail
- Working in a Coal Mine - Devo
- This is the Day - The The
- I would die 4 U - Prince
As you can see, things start to fall apart somewhat, about halfway through the mix. I like all the songs in the mix, but the order is not quite right.
What should I add, oh wise music people?
Day I was born: She Loves You - The Beatles.
I love The Beatles! This is not my favorite Beatles song, but it is a happy one that everyone can sing.
"She Loves You" has its own entry in Wikipedia, and among other things it says "The song was also the first time Lennon's name had taken precedence over McCartney in the credits" (Since John, of course, was the better Beatle).
For my 21st (AKA the year I was married): One More Night - Phil Collins
I am a huge Genesis fan and while Peter is my hero, Phil is no slouch. His solo stuff can be a little hit or miss and this song is not one of his best. I prefer "in the Air" or "Take me home." Which reminds me of a side story: when I was in France getting married I was getting so tired of listening and talking in French all the time. My head buzzed to the point where I could literally look at someone who was talking to me and not understand a word of what they were saying. I would periodically excuse myself to "take a nap - jet lag" and then put my Walkman on full-blast. "Take me Home" was one of the songs I would blast. Even though I didn't really want to go home, I did miss my language a lot.
Even though "One More Night" is pretty sappy, it feels appropriate for a girl who was about to get married.
"Like a river to the sea
I will always be with you
And if you sail away
I will follow you "
So this should be relatively easy: I picked a song in my collections that I also have posted partial lyrics to (but you have to check each CD to find them). Hint, the singer is a woman:
I left inside too early the animal, me cannot without my hand on his throat food; I engagements always and still him. The favourite oh-, is thus him, Bonbon, thinks you that you can, insane like I fol. You say that you it simple Spook, do not go you not, but I know and request me that you become. As you can, to freely run quickly the baby of me. Quickly you can. I can be soft in your Palm, but I rise soon for a fight famished, I do not make gain and you. My pretty opening organizes the sentences which refute your faith in the man. Thus, if you verfängst me trying to find my manner in your heart below your skin you. As you can, to stripe itself quickly outside, freely the baby me. Quickly you can. As you can, to stripe itself quickly outside, freely quickly the baby me, as you can. Sometimes, my understanding does not agitate and shifts. But most of the time, him. And I come in the place, in which I ask around a jack, or I drown and was in the miracles. And I am your daughter, if you say that it is a gift. And you give me more your drugs. I am of Yeah your domestic animal, if you precisely declare me that causes it to him of a gift 'which is me of Whys is tired and a small number on of Whys, the Juste erdrosselt the need which because, because is. I left the animal tested inside and then even me to forgive him, but it is too early, therefore I engagements still still still still again. And for little, while more, increase to me the unequal wind which sterile country one complains and to show. But, if you receive brilliant ideas, dear rest I flowered inside. As you can, the baby, is fast period of waiting me, me pays attention chamfered outside that too there me the box, perhaps late however at least approximately. As you can leave me, this thing its manner of quickly running to make make. Quickly you can.
It's hard to pick just one song, like most of you I have a list.
That said, as many times as I listen to these two songs, I never get sick of them and I always feel happier afterward:
Yes, they are pretty much the same song and I don't usually listen to them back to back. Also I'm not much into surfer music and I'm new (and still quite ignorant) to hip hop. Yet I love both versions.
P.s. If you don't like swear words, please don't listen (the Dick Dale song is from Pulp Fiction after all)
P.P.s. I really love that Vox picked up the artwork for the Black Eyed Peas song. That was too cool.
